Tel Aviv, home to the IDF’s central command and the Nevatim Air Base, seemed to bear the worst of the assault, absorbing several direct hits.

The Israeli military announced that the attacks, orchestrated by Iran, were aimed at millions of civilians across the nation, marking a significant escalation in the region.

IRGC Claimed Responsibility

Sirens blared across Israel on Tuesday afternoon as Iranian missiles targeted central and southern regions in Tehran’s first direct attack on the Jewish state since April, according to Israeli military reports.

The attacks came in waves, with a second barrage seen over Jerusalem less than 10 minutes after the initial strikes, as reported by The Guardian.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the assault, stating it was a direct retaliation for the recent assassinations of top Hezbollah officials, including their leader, Hassan Nasrallah. This marks a significant escalation in regional tensions.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a stern warning, stating, “If the Zionist regime reacts to the operation, it will face heavy attacks.”

In defense of the missile strikes, the Iranian Mission to the United Nations justified the action as a response to Israeli airstrikes in the region. “Iran’s legal, rational, and legitimate response to the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime — which involved targeting Iranian nationals and interests and infringing upon the national sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran — has been duly carried out,” read the official statement. This marks Tehran’s firm stance in its ongoing confrontation with Israel.

Attack Time

The missile assault concluded at 8:32 p.m. local time, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vowing retaliation against Iran.

“This fire will have consequences,” said IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari. “We have plans, and we will act at a time and place of our choosing.”

The IDF reported that the explosions heard throughout the country were the result of either missile interceptions or direct impacts. At least two civilians were injured in Tel Aviv, with Israel’s Magen David Adom confirming that both were struck by shrapnel.

The IDF highlighted that around 10 million civilians live in the areas targeted by the Iranian missiles.

In response to the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his security cabinet retreated to a secure bunker complex, where they had convened shortly before the strikes began. Reports indicate that Iran intended to utilize only ballistic missiles, which can reach Israel in approximately 12 minutes.

As the situation unfolded, videos began circulating on social media, showing missiles and fragments streaking across the sky, with several bright trails observed crashing into Tel Aviv.

“All Israeli civilians are in bomb shelters as rockets from Iran are fired at Israel,” the IDF stated in a release at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Injuries Reported as Civilians Take Shelter

In response to the escalating conflict, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris convened at the White House to discuss the Iranian attack and the United States’ commitment to defending the Jewish State.

“This morning, @VP and I convened our national security team to discuss Iranian plans to launch an imminent missile attack against Israel,” President Biden wrote on X.

“We discussed how the United States is prepared to help Israel defend against these attacks and protect American personnel in the region.”

In response to the escalating situation, the U.S. has deployed additional military assets, including fighter jets, to the area and has pledged to assist in defending the Jewish state against the Iranian strikes. “We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” an official stated. “A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”

In April, Tehran launched over 330 drones and missiles at Israel, the majority of which were intercepted with assistance from the U.S. and Jordan.

U.S. Military Response: Troop Mobilization and Aircraft Carrier Deployment

However, if Iran relies solely on ballistic missiles this time, it could significantly reduce the time available for the U.S. and its allies to intercept the assault, a U.S. official told Axios. Ballistic missiles travel at higher altitudes and greater speeds, making them significantly more challenging to intercept.

“The attack from Iran may be on a wide scale,” the IDF warned, urging Israelis to adhere to guidelines for taking shelter.

In preparation for potential escalations, the U.S. has previously mobilized additional troops in the region and extended the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier group to help counter any incoming attacks from Iran.
