What is a Blue Alert?
Blue Alerts are part of a series of public safety alerts issued by the state to request the public’s help in locating individuals. These alerts are similar to AMBER Alerts or Silver Alerts, which are typically issued for missing people. However, Blue Alerts are specifically used when authorities are searching for someone believed to be involved in the killing or serious injury of a law enforcement officer.
Criteria for Issuing a Blue Alert
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the following conditions must be met for a Blue Alert to be activated:
- A law enforcement officer must have been killed or seriously injured by the offender.
- The investigating agency must determine that the offender poses a serious risk or threat to the public and law enforcement personnel.
- A detailed description of the offender’s vehicle, vehicle tag, or partial tag must be available for public broadcast.
- The investigating agency must recommend activating the Blue Alert to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
