A security guard tragically lost his life after being shot during an altercation with suspected shoplifters inside a CVS Pharmacy in Dallas, Texas, late Friday night, police reported.
The deadly encounter occurred around 11 p.m. at the store near Main Street, where the guard confronted two individuals allegedly attempting to steal merchandise. According to the Dallas Police Department, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and fatally shot the guard before both suspects fled the scene, as reported by CBS News Texas.
The victim has been identified as Anthony Egenou, a devoted husband and father of three, according to statements from his family.
CVS Addresses Fatal Shooting of Third-Party Security Guard
The victim worked for a third-party security firm tasked with enhancing safety at the retail store, a CVS spokesperson confirmed.
“We are fully cooperating with the Dallas Police as they investigate the tragic incident at our Main Street location last night,” said Amy Thibault, CVS Health’s lead director of external communications, in a statement to The Dallas Morning News.
Despite the tragedy, the store and pharmacy have resumed normal operations.
Delayed Reopening Sparks Concern Among Local Residents After Shooting
The CVS store remained closed until 10 a.m. Saturday, opening its doors to over a dozen customers three hours later than its usual schedule, according to local reports.
The violent incident has left nearby residents unsettled. Rebekah Montgomery, a downtown Dallas resident who has lived next to the retailer for two years, expressed her concerns about safety.
“I will probably not go to the CVS alone,” Montgomery told CBS. “I don’t want to be constantly worried that someone could come in and do that. It’s kind of crazy to think that someone could just go in and shoot someone.”
